Rare Presentation of Oculomotor Palsy Related to Diabetes: A Case Report

Absract: This text describes the case of a 69-year-old female patient with untreated diabetes who developed a right oculomotor nerve palsy (III). This palsy, a rare complication of diabetes, manifested as a sudden drooping of the eyelid, headaches, and dizziness. After ruling out other possible causes through complementary examinations, the diagnosis was determined to be a microvascular palsy linked to the patient’s poorly controlled diabetes. The treatment included corticosteroids, statins, and a course of insulin therapy to stabilise her blood sugar. The outcome was very favourable, with a complete recovery of eye function in three months, alongside a significant improvement in her glycaemic control. This article highlights the importance of considering diabetes as a cause of oculomotor palsy and the effectiveness of prompt management for a good prognosis.
